Producer

The Shiraz Vat 9 comes from the best plots of domaine Tyrrell, “Ashmans”. This Vat 9 blend is composed of Shiraz grapes from our Short Flat, NVC and 8 Acres vineyards. These vines are at least 50 years old, the oldest having been planted in 1892, and grow in red clay soils resting on limestone.

Owner and history

Tyrrell's is as much a part of the Hunter Valley's heritage as the Semillon and Shiraz vines we have cultivated since our founder, English immigrant Edward Tyrrell, first planted them in the mid-19th century. THE domaine Tyrrell, nestled at the foot of the Brokenback Mountains in the Hunter Valley, is a unique patchwork of vineyards. Thriving on a wide variety of soils, from sandy loams resting on ancient stream beds to heavier red clays on limestone, these vineyards produce some of the most distinctive and refined wines in the world.

Vinification and aging

The harvest took place in relatively calm conditions, without inclement weather or extreme heat. This vintage produced complex and balanced wines of great aromatic purity and is considered an exceptional vintage for the Hunter Valley.

Sold and hand-sorted in the vineyards during the third week of February, the plots fermented separately in open vats. The different wines were then aged in French oak barrels (2700 L), mostly new, until the blending of Vaisseau 9 in November.
