The Margaux appellation spans five communes: Margaux, Cantenac, Labarde, Soussans, and Arsac. Its soils, composed of limestone and gravel, are among the finest in the Bordeaux region . The wines produced here are almost exclusively red , characterized not only by their aromatic finesse but also by their aging potential. It is therefore no surprise that Margaux boasts numerous Classified Growths of 1855 !
Château Margaux
This wine estate originated in the 16th century. It quickly expanded to 265 hectares, roughly the same size as today, with a third of it planted with vines, as is still the case. The current building dates from the early 19th century and perfectly blends beauty and practicality. It houses an elegant and refined residence, as well as houses and workshops for the various workers, the cellars and vat rooms, and even a cooperage . It was classified as a Premier Grand Cru in 1855. Château Margaux is currently managed by Corinne Mentzelopoulos , and produces both white and red wines.
The Grand Vin of Château Margaux is elegant, intense, and fresh, with a beautiful length on the palate. It is also rarely astringent and has fantastic aging potential.
Château Rauzan-Ségla
Château Rauzan-Ségla The estate practices sustainable viticulture and pays particular attention to its vines. Harvesting and vinification are carried out grape variety by grape variety and plot by plot, then the wines are blended after a few months of aging in barrels. They will then continue their aging for another 18 months, still in oak barrels, before being bottled.
This Second Growth Classified wine belongs to the Wertheimer family, who also own Chanel and Château Canon (Saint-Émilion). The wine is fresh, delicate, and yet powerful. It exudes floral aromas and reveals fruitiness on the palate.
Brane-Cantenac Castle
This prestigious estate was established in the 18th century and classified as a Second Growth in 1855. It was acquired by the Lurton family in 1925 and experienced a revival in the mid-1990s. Today, it is one of the largest estates in the region, with 75 hectares of vineyards. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are the primary grape varieties cultivated, along with some Cabernet Franc and Carmenère. Since 2010, 10 hectares have been used for organic viticulture trials.
The estate's flagship wine, Château Brane-Cantenac , is aged for 18 months in oak barrels, can be cellared for 10 to 20 years, and exudes aromas of ripe fruit with a touch of freshness. The second wine, Baron de Brane , is aged for 12 months and can be cellared for 5 to 10 years. Like its older sibling, it is characterized by fruit aromas and a hint of freshness. Finally, Margaux de Brane is the Château's "entry-level" wine. Made from younger vines, it offers aromas of red fruit and a lovely roundness. It can be cellared for 5 to 10 years.
