The Red Shoulder Ranch Chardonnay comes from a vineyard located in the Carneros region, south of the Napa Valley. This terroir benefits from a climat Cool and windy, influenced by the proximity of San Pablo Bay. The soils are composed of clay and silt, offering excellent drainage and good water retention. The Red Shoulder Ranch is the estate's flagship vineyard. Shafer Vineyards dedicated to Chardonnay. Located in the prestigious Los Carneros region, at the southern end of the Napa Valley, It represents one of the most elegant and renowned interpretations of Californian Chardonnay. A Terroir of Freshness: Los Carneros Unlike the rest of the Napa Valley, Often very hot, the Carneros area benefits from the direct influence of San Pablo Bay. Climat The vineyard is swept by morning mists and cool sea breezes in the afternoon. These conditions moderate temperatures, allowing the Chardonnay to ripen slowly while retaining lively acidity and great aromatic finesse. Soils: The soils are mainly composed of shallow clays and volcanic deposits, which limits the vigor of the vines and concentrates the flavors in the berries.

Owner and history

Our estate has been cultivated and vinified since 1880, during the first boom of the Napa Valley as an American wine region. Napa's pioneering winemakers not only supplied San Francisco's cellars, but also exported their wines across the country and won gold medals at the 1889 Paris Universal Exposition. John Shafer, a Chicago publisher, acquired our domaine in 1972 and devoted the mid-1970s to planting Cabernet Sauvignon on the hillsides. In 1978, he embarked on large-scale winemaking, producing the first Cabernet Sauvignon of the domaine. In 1983, his son, Doug Shafer, joined the domaine as cellar master. The following year, Elias Fernandez joined the team, initially as assistant cellar master. Over the following decades, this team created Hillside Select and forged the Shafer style, synonymous with elegance, richness, and balance. In 1994, Elias earned the title of Winemaker, and in 2002, he was named "Winemaker of the Year" by Food & Wine magazine. The following year, he was received at the White House in recognition of his leadership role within the Latin American community. Numerous other accolades followed.

Vinification and aging

The Chardonnay Red Shoulder Ranch is a wine that bears the elegant imprint of its terroir: a 27-hectare vineyard that stretches across the bucolic hills of Los Carneros, at the confluence of the Napa Valley and San Francisco Bay. The vineyard owes its name to the shoulder-winged hawks and other birds of prey that play an essential role in our sustainable agricultural practices (in this case, by naturally regulating populations of gophers and other rodents).

Whole-cluster pressing and fermentation with indigenous yeasts in individual barrels (40% oak, 60% stainless steel); 0% malolactic fermentation
