A story of family and traditions
Founded in 1691, THE domaine is managed today by the 13th generation of winemakers, represented by the brother and sister duo Marie and Jean-Paul ZusslinTogether, they oversee a vineyard of approximately 16 to 18 hectares and perpetuate ancestral know-how while bringing a modern and refined vision of wine.
Pioneers of Biodynamic Agriculture
This is the true signature of domaine. The Zusslins banned chemical products very early on:
-
THE domaine is fully certified in Organic farming since 1997.
-
He took the approach to the extreme. biodynamics (Demeter and Biodyvin certified since 2000). Work in the vineyard is carried out in accordance with lunar cycles, using herbal teas, and a large part of the plowing is done with draft horses so as not to compact the soils.
Exceptional Mosaic Terroirs
THE domaine has the advantage of cultivating three major terroirs with very distinct geology, which give the wines very marked personalities:
-
The Bollenberg: A very sunny and windy limestone hillside. It produces powerful, rich wines with excellent ripeness (magnificent Gewurztraminer and Pinot Noir).
-
THE Clos Liebenberg: A monopole of domaine (they are the sole owners), a preserved haven surrounded by hedges and trees, on loess and limestone soil. The wines there are of a straightforwardness, purity and crystalline minerality (especially the Riesling).
-
THE Grand Cru Pfingstberg: A terroir of sandstone and limestone which produces wines with great aging potential, complex, deep and noble.
The Style of Wines
Valentin Zusslin's wines are distinguished by their absolute purity, their uprightness and tension. Contrary to a certain historical Alsatian tendency towards wines rich in residual sugars, the domaine favors profiles dry, vibrant and digestible, while maintaining a rich mouthfeel.
THE domaine shines on all fronts:
-
Their Riesling And Pinot Gris are equilibrium models.
-
Their Crémants d'Alsace (often undosed or very lightly dosed) are among the finest and most vinous in the region, rivaling great Champagnes.
-
Their Pinot Noirs (precisely crafted) prove that Alsace has become a land of great, complex and silky red wines.
The little extra: THE domaine is part of the association The Renaissance of Appellations, created by Nicolas Joly, which brings together winemakers from all over the world practicing strict and high-quality biodynamics.
