Tasting notes

The color of this 2019 Ridge Monte Bello is a deep, intense red. On the nose, it reveals complex aromas of ripe black fruit, sweet spices, and subtle notes of cedar. On the palate, the attack is ample and rich, with silky tannins and lovely acidity. The finish is long and persistent, leaving an elegant and refined aromatic impression. A red wine of great finesse.

Food & wine pairings

It will perfectly complement grilled red meats, game and aged cheeses.

Producer

In 1886, on the slopes of the Santa Cruz Mountains, the first Monte Bello vines were planted and construction of the winery began. The first vintage from these young vines was produced in 1892. During Prohibition (1920-1933), the vineyard was not fully maintained; a few vines survived until the late 1930s but were virtually abandoned in the 1940s. Eight acres of Cabernet Sauvignon were replanted in 1949. These vines produced the first Ridge Monte Bello (1962) and subsequent vintages until 1974, when younger parcels, replanted in the 1960s, were considered. Since then, the historic ridge vineyards have been gradually replanted.

Owner and history

In 1962, Ridge Vineyards produced its first Monte Bello, and two years later its first Zinfandel. Since then, Ridge has championed single-plot winemaking, scouring California for those rare and exceptional vineyards where climat, Soil and grape variety harmonize perfectly. The Lytton Springs vineyard in Sonoma County has joined the domaine Ridge in 1991. A quarter of a century of experience with this terroir had convinced us of its exceptional character. Forty consecutive vintages of Geyserville testify once again to the remarkable combination of this place and these grape varieties. Although born in the early sixties, in the context of post-Prohibition and the modernization of Californian winemaking, Ridge prioritizes nature and tradition over technology. Our approach, which has remained true to our traditions, is simple: select intense and flavorful grapes; intervene in the process only when necessary; and finally, reveal all the richness and unique character of the fruit in the wine.

Vinification and aging

Monte Bello Vineyard, located just 24 kilometers from the Pacific Ocean, is part of the Santa Cruz Mountains appellation, California's coolest Cabernet Sauvignon-growing region. Our philosophy is to allow this unique terroir to fully express itself, rather than trying to force it into a particular style in the cellar. To achieve this, we favor natural and artisanal winemaking techniques: separate cultivation of each grape variety and each plot, fermentation in small tanks with indigenous yeasts, and aging of the wines in air-dried American oak barrels for complete and natural malolactic fermentation. At several stages of the process, we taste each batch and evaluate its individual qualities. This rigorous selection is essential to crafting Monte Bello, a wine that faithfully reflects the character of the vineyard, not the whims of the winemaker.
