The name "Mer sur Mont" takes on its full meaning in this cooler vintage. It highlights the link between the steep slopes of Meurville ("Mont") and the ancient limestone seabed ("Mer"). The Precision of an Engineer: Rémi Leroy uses his training as an agricultural engineer to adapt his winemaking to the acidic structure of the 2014. The use of wood is even more subtle here so as not to mask the purity of the fruit. The 2014 Vintage: Unlike 2015, 2014 is marked by great aromatic freshness and a very "vertical" structure on the palate, ideal for la garde.

Owner and history

Rémi Leroy, oenologist and agricultural engineer trained in Bordeaux in 2006, I run a domaine Family-owned property of nearly 9 hectares located in Meurville in the Côte des Bar. My clay-limestone soils come from the Upper Jurassic period. The majority are on hillsides - the Kimmeridgian which is also found in Chablis - but the particularity of the Meurville cru, besides the generally shallow depth of soil, lies in the presence on the plateau overlooking the village of pure Portlandian (an almost exclusive feature of Champagne) offering even poorer soils. On such soils where the vine must naturally suffer to ensure its growth, the viticulture practiced makes it possible to obtain fruits and juices of remarkable typicity.

Vinification and aging

Winemaking at Rémi Leroy is carried out with the utmost care, respecting Champagne traditions.
Plot of 1ha03ares on the Portlandian plateau.
Extremely shallow, clayey soil with a high stoniness.
Massal selections of Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier, Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc on the uncommon 3309C rootstock. This gives good ripeness and a perfect expression of the terroir.

Planted in 1960, yields are low.
Vinification and aging in 300 and 350L barrels of an average of 5 wines, then bottling and long aging under cork.
The 2014 vintage will be available soon. Then 2015 and 2016.

The team's opinion

While 2015 is intended to be sunny and full-bodied, la cuvée "Mer sur Mont" 2014 by Rémi Leroy offers a radically different face: that of straightness, finesse and an almost electric mineral tension. The 2014 vintage is often nicknamed "the winemakers' vintage" in Champagne, because it rewarded those who, like Rémi Leroy, knew how to wait for late ripeness to capture a noble acidity.
